The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region IV CALABARZON with some of its employees joined in the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) kick-off activity, held on November 5, 2018 at Liwasang Aurora, Quezon Memorial Circle, Diliman, Quezon City.
With the theme, “Quality Rice. Quality Life.” this celebration aims to continuously urge everyone to consume the right amount of rice and its healthy forms such as brown rice and rice mixes.
DA Undersecretary for Operations Ariel T. Cayanan once again asked everybody to take only what we can consume so we could eventually help lower the demand of rice, and in turn, lower its price, and significantly contribute in attaining and sustaining rice self-sufficiency and food security in the Philippines. He also encouraged all to try mixing rice with other staples such as banana (saba), sweet potato, and corn or eat highly fibrous unpolished rice or brown rice as it is a healthy option for us. Most importantly, he emphasized that each and every one should be “RiCEponsible” in our own way – improving ourselves or families while aiding in the betterment of the rice industry in the country.
Meanwhile, Be RICEponsible Campaign Director Myriam G. Layaoen led the recitation of Panatang Makapalay to encourage the rice sector and the consumers to promote and practice the sowing of right amount of seeds, cook enough rice for the family, and recycle leftover rice into other dishes.
Moreover, other activities included the ceremonial turn-over of rice seeds to Putat Catandaan Irrigators’ Association from Nasugbu, Batangas, introduction of rice exhibits, launching of rice ambassadors, and RiceROCKan with the DA bands from Regions I, II, and CALABARZON.
Other staff from various attached agencies and bureaus of DA, and other government institutions supported the event.
Pursuant to Proclamation No. 524, series of 2014, the country celebrates the NRAM in November, being spearheaded by the DA.
