Jasmin Kaye C. Familaran, a Grade V pupil of Marcos Espejo Elementary School in San Jose, Batangas, emerged as the first prize winner in the recently concluded Regional On-the-Spot Poster Making contest of the Department of Agriculture Region IV CALABARZON (DA CALABARZON) held at the 4th Floor Conference Room of the said office. Familaran received a cash prize worth Php5,000.00 and will be representing the region in the national competition.

“This activity paves way for young artists to showcase their skills. Likewise, through art, we hope to get them involved in inculcating to the minds of the youth in particular, valuable contributions of agriculture in our daily lives,” Regional Information Officer Patria T. Bulanhagui said.

The Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Office of the DA CALABARZON, in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) Region IV-A, spearheaded the said contest.

Before the start of the event, Chief Administrative Officer Felix I. Ramos encouraged the pupil-contestants to learn more about agri-fishery sector. He said that in this way, they can fully appreciate the beauty of what agriculture can bring to the people.

The competition was opened to all Grades IV to VI elementary pupils from any public schools in the region.

The participating students from different elementary schools in the region focused on the theme, “Our Actions are our Future. A #ZeroHungerWorldby2030isPossible.”

The Regional-On-The-Spot Poster Making Contest is an annual event of the DA to raise awareness among the students the value of agriculture in our society. This is one of the main programs of the DA and Food and Agriculture Organization in coordination with the DepEd.

This year, the region selected three pupils as winners and were given PhP5,000.00 for the first prize, PhP3,000.00 for the 2nd prize, and PhP2,000.00 for the 3rd placer. Other students were given certificate plus PhP500.00 each.

Coaches/teachers and participating schools were also given with certificates as recognition for their active participation.

Judges of the contest were Esther G. Bulan, Retired Art Director of St. Scholastica Academy; Rosemarie B. Olfato, DA CALABARZON Senior Science Research Specialist II; and John Jasper L. Daquigan, Information Office staff.
