Farmers’ Field Day on Sorghum Technology Demonstration, held Around 62 farmer-leaders from CALABARZON region attended the Farmers’ Field Day on Sorghum Technology Demonstration held on April 12, 2019 at Lipa Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (LARES) in Batangas.
According to Department of Agriculture (DA) CALABARZON Regional Director Arnel V. de Mesa, the said activity is in line with the instruction of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol to propagate sorghum production, a grass variety which produces protein-rich grains as an alternative to corn for animal feeds. “The sorghum has a good potential since it undertakes ratoon cropping, a practice of growing a crop from the stubbles of previous crop without replanting.
Also, it has a high drought tolerance and can be easily grown in poor soil,” Director de Mesa added. DA CALABARZON is inclined to push for the development of sorghum production to meet the growing demand of feeds for livestock sector. Regional Corn Program Coordinator and Sorghum Production lead researcher Avelita M. Rosales said that, “We will be supporting the farmers through research and development, production and processing, and in marketing and enterprise development.” The beneficiaries of the sorghum production program are the indigenous people and other farmers who want to go into sorghum productions. • JBGA
