Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William D. Dar together with Senator Cynthia A. Villar formally turned over the Solar-Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) prototype grant to the farmers in Brgy. Wawa-Ibayo, Lumban, Laguna on October 29, 2019.
According to Sec. Dar the SPIS would eliminate the need of irrigation device fueled by diesel.
“Almost all farmers in Lumban spend around P15,000.00 on diesel to operate their irrigation systems. Their expenses will drop once this solar-powered system is set-up because you don’t need to pay for solar energy, “said DA chief.
The DA’s prototype has the capacity to irrigate 32 hectares for large-scale and 5 hectares for small scale SPIS in rice and other high-value crops all year round.
Agriculture chief said that one of the advantages of SPIS is that hundreds of units could be constructed in a short period of time in a less expense.
Andes Suarez, one of the farmer-beneficiaries, said the removing of high cost of irrigation would help his farming community improve productivity. JBGA, DA-RAFIS
