APRIL 16, 2020, TIAONG, QUEZON – Quezon Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (QARES) mobilizes its farmworkers in conducting a series of farm activities at Brgy. Lagalag, Tiaong, Quezon, in support of Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) Laban sa COVID-19 program of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Even before the program, the research station sustains farming and cultivation of available farmland in the station. Among the activities of the QARES involve activating of the irrigation system, tilling of lands, and potting of seeds.
As part of the community of farmers, the station rolls out farm strategies in order to help achieve an adequate food level amidst the COVID-19 crisis. According to QARES Officer-In-Charge Superindentent Ms. Daisynette D. Manalo, the station is on full force and on-going farm efforts are working out as planned.
With the allotted 9,350-square meter planting area, the research station aims to deploy the following vegetable seeds: tomato, eggplant, pechay, mustard, okra, cowpea, mungbean, pigeon pea, radish, and hot chili bell pepper.
Farmworkers in QARES shared that planting vegetable seeds can also be done at home through the practice of backyard farming or urban gardening.
As part of the DA’s program, vegetable seeds can be requested from and provided by the nearest agricultural program coordinating office.
“Everyone is encouraged to plant and help sustain food even beyond the lockdown,” Ms. Manalo said. ● (JAPE, DA-RAFIS)
