Department of Agriculture (DA) Region IV CALABARZON supported the seminar awareness on Food Safety Standards for Academe conducted by Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fishery Standards (DA-BAFS) on May 31, 2018 at Sunrise Hotel, Tagaytay City.

The seminar aimed to increase the understanding and appreciation of food safety related standards developed by BAFS.

In her welcome message, DA CALABARZON Regional Information Officer and BAFS focal person Patria T. Bulanhagui urged the participants to disseminate the relevant information on what food safety and quality is all about, its general principles and practices of food safety and quality standards.

Futhermore, Southern Tagalog Integrated Agricultural Research Center (STIARC) Senior Science Research Specialist Ms. Virgilia Arellano shared their experience of practicing food safety and quality standards in the research center.

As part of the technical working group, academe plays an important role in promoting and practicing food safety as the academe provide scientific basis in the development of standards for quality good practices.

Different resource persons were tapped in discussing topics including PNS on Code of Agricultural Practices (GAP) on Fruits and Vegetables by Dr. Erlinda Serrano of University of the Philippines- Los Baños (UPLB), Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) from Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and Status of Implementation of Food Safety Standards in the Philippines by Rhitzel O. Palima of BAFS.

Also, representatives Central Luzon State University (CLSU), UPLB and Robina Farm shared their testimonials and initiatives in promotion and implementation of GAP and GAHP.

The said seminar was attended by 26 representatives from state universities, Agricultural Training Institute and private sector.
